About This Quote

Victory has a hundred fathers and defeat is an orphan. The origin of this quote is unclear, but it could be an allusion to the so-called "Rollo-de-la-Rivera" or "Battle of the River Plate", a naval battle fought in November 1778. The Spanish fleet was led by Admiral Filippo Andrea Collado, and was initially successful against the British, losing only two ships and managing to damage several others. However, the British were able to re-organize their forces and sink or capture all of the Spanish ships at bay except for four. Following a few hours of intense fighting, a single British ship was able to destroy the remainder of the Spanish fleet.
